AN ACT
To provide for time in Nauru to be eleven or twelve hours in advance of Greenwish Mean Time and connected matters.

AN ACT
To provide for time in Nauru to be eleven or twelve hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time and connected matters.

Enacted by the Parliament Nauru as follows:–
SHORT TITLE
1. This Act may be cited as the Nauru Standard Time Act 1978.
INTERPRETATION
2. In this Act –
"Greenwich Mean Time" means the mean time of the meridian of Greenwich in England;
"The meridian of Greenwich" means the meridian of Greenwich by relation to the markers or posts marking or indicating zero degrees of longitude placed or erected at Greenwich in England by the Royal Observatory, England;
"Nauru Alternate Time" means twelve hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time;
"Nauru Standard Time" means eleven hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time;
"Present Time" means eleven and one half hours in advance of Greenwich Mean Time.
TIME CHANGE
3. (1) Cabinet may by notice in the Gazette prescribe that as from a date and time not earlier than twenty-one days from the date of publication of the issue of the Gazette in which such notice appears time in Nauru shall be Nauru Alternate Time or Nauru Standard Time.
(2) A notice under subsection (1) shall be so drawn as to take effect at two of the clock ante meridiem on a Saturday as measured by the time, be it Present Time, Nauru Alternate Time or Nauru Standard Time, in force on the date on which the issue of the Gazette in which the notice appears, is published.
PUBLICITY
4. (1) The Cabinet shall require Radio Nauru to notify on each of the seven days preceding the Saturday on which a notice under section 3(1) takes effect and in such manner as the Cabinet may require, the fact that time in Nauru will change on the next following Saturday at two of the clock ante meridiem.
(2) Radio Nauru shall comply with a request by Cabinet under subsection (1) and shall broadcast notification not less than twice a day in the English and Nauruan languages and in such other language as the Cabinet may require.
MODIFICATION OF INTERPRETATION ACT 1971
5. (1) Section 51 of the Interpretation Act 1971 shall not have effect so long as Nauru Alternate Time or Nauru Standard Time is in force pursuant to this Act.
(2) For so long as Nauru Alternate Time or Nauru Standard Time is in force subsection (3) shall have effect in place of section 51 of the Interpretation Act.
(3) For all purposes whatever time and periods of time are measured or fixed by relation to the time in force under the provisions of this Act.
